About Me

I am a 24 year old postgraduate from Cork, Ireland, with a passion for all things digital and writing. I have a demonstrated history of working in the publishing industry, I am an aspiring digital marketer and a stand-up comedian. I am an expert public speaker, strong media manager, proficient communicator and am currently searching for employment! Here is my story:

Philosophy

I studied philosophy as part of my Bachelor of Arts Undergraduate Degree. I obtained valuable skills in research and decision making. Most importantly, it opened my mind to new ways of thinking, both rationally and creatively. It allowed me to write on current topics in the world, such as artificial intelligence, ethics in the workplace, politics and automation. I was taught logic and to be able to communicate in a clear and precise manner. I will always get my point across well and think outside of the box. My final year projects involved a research essay on humour and developing a syllabus for a philosophy module to be available for UCC students in the future.

Computer Science

Taking computer science as part of my Undergraduate Degree allowed me to experience the practical side of the computing world. I learned the basics of coding languages (HTML and CSS) and gained a firm understanding of the fundamentals of computing, including current and emerging technology and software in the professional industry. I was given projects in graphic design, e-commerce, digital media and creating the WordPress website that you are on now!

Digital Arts

While I was finishing my Undergraduate degree, I was looking to further my education in a way that combined my passion for philosophy and computer science – that is why I choose to do a Postgraduate Diploma in Digital Arts and Humanities. It has allowed me to truly expand my knowledge on how we as humans interact with technology and how technology aids us to achieve our goals. I utilised industry standard tools for graphic design, web design, digital video capture and editing, data analytics and data visualisation. I also learned about game design, in particular through a narrative perspective, and the professional world of publishing and editing. I plan to convert my Postgraduate Diploma into a Masters Degree part-time in the next 3 years.

Digital Marketing

Following my PGDip, I was offered a digital marketing internship at Cork Craft and Design. From my time in university, I had the skills required and found the opportunity to put them to use. I was shown the practicalities of the digital marketing industry and particularly excelled at copywriting and content management. I also aided in the organisation and set up of several events over the course of Cork Craft Month. When my internship concluded, I knew I wanted to continue down this route and enter a specialised course. I recently graduated with a certificate in Online Marketing and Digital Strategy in Griffith College Cork, where I learned more about the theory behind digital marketing, in particular the SOSTAC approach. My digital tool knowledge was expanded even further with social media tools. For my final project, I wrote a digital marketing strategy for a local Cork company (who later incorporated the strategy for the next quarter) and received two Hubspot certificates for Inbound Marketing and Growth Driven Design.

Journalism

I began writing articles in 2018 for Motley Magazine as a regular contributor and progressed on to the role of staff writer and then Entertainment Editor for 2019/2020. My writing interests include films, video games, comedy, philosophy and technology. I mainly write reviews and retrospective pieces with a focus on educating someone with little knowledge on a subject, while still providing a fresh perspective for veterans of that topic. My articles have widely shared by the English lecturing staff in University College Cork and while I was Entertainment Editor, the Entertainment section of the publication was consistently the most popular section on their website and social media. You can find a collection of my articles for Motley here. I plan to write more in the future through my blog and various publications.

Acting

At the age of 16, I auditioned for my secondary school’s Transition Year play, Alone It Stands. I was given the part of a child named Spider, the Bonfire King of Limerick. What came as a shock to me was at the end of the first show, I received the loudest applause of the night and was the only actor to receive a standing ovation. This became a pattern in the remaining three nights. What was originally meant to be a small role became the audience’s favourite, and for my performance and dedication to the production, I received the Michael Sheedy Award for Drama. The year after, I joined Monforts College for the Performing Arts and achieved a Grade 5 in the LAMDA Performance Examinations. In university, I took part in friend’s short film projects and was featured in Vodafone’s Ireland’s Funniest Campus competition. I also wrote, directed, starred in and edited my own short film as part of my masters.

Comedy

I have been doing stand-up comedy since 2018 and have been described as an alternative comedian with a flare for storytelling and breaking comedic norms. I performed and headlined in professional comedy gigs all around Ireland and was a part of RTÉ’s “How Ireland Unwinds”. Doing stand-up has allowed me to develop my communication and public speaking skills to an incredibly high standard. Not only do I have no issue speaking in front of a crowd, I actually thrive off of it. Additionally, I have also helped organise, promote and host comedy nights around Cork city.
